DragonBox Art Box simply put is an art subscription.
As a kid there were a number of things I used to receive in the mail via subscription. I’ve always loved mail; sending and receiving packages, letters, and cards. Mail is top ten one of my favorite things.
When I first conceived of it it was during the height of the Covid Pandemic during lockdown. There were a number of things happening:
We were all very dependent upon deliveries for meals, groceries, as well as other random things people purchased online at midnight out of boredom.
There was a renewed interest in mail since it was the main thing happening.
There was an attempt to dismantle the US Postal service (for no real logical reason I’ll add).
I thought it was first fun for me and second a way to encourage those who never thought of being an art collector to collect as making it a low stakes and non-intimidating way to do it. It was also a way for collectors to expand what they already had.
Each of the projects was mailed in a recycled Whitman’s box -my Mom is a big fan so I had set aside a few boxes during Valentine’s chocolate season- keeping each piece small and intimate. This project/capsule collection turned into the purchaser’s personal art show. This was an important aspect especially since attending shows and going to galleries and museums wasn’t possible at the time.
